Dankzij het harde werk van Eyes on Animals Dier&Recht Ethical Farming Ireland gaat Nederland eindelijk optreden tegen de wrede kalfjesimport van Ierland naar Nederland. Pasgeboren kalfjes zitten dagenlang op transport en krijgen nauwelijks melk. Wij onderhandelen in het Europees Parlement ondertussen verder over de nieuwe Europese regels voor diertransporten.

Ireland "requires the highest standards of animal welfare at every stage of the animal’s life, including during transport" claims spokesperson for Martin Heydon Seriously? Depriving a two week old unweaned calf of feed for 30 hours is the highest standard of welfare? It's appalling animal welfare! "Ireland adheres to the provisions of the relevant EU regulation for this sector – Council Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport." No it does not. The feeding requirements are not met, which is a breach of legislation. Only the Dutch authorities are enforcing it.

"We are calling not only on these four Irish transport operators, but on the entire sector, to take measures so that compliance with European rules is achieved as quickly as possible. We challenge them to begin this process immediately," the authority said.
Why is the Dutch govt the only authority calling for the law to be enforced? This really is an embarrassment for Ireland and for the European Commission that has done nothing following it's own audit!
