📢 Breaking! Last Sunday May 4th a livestock truck travelling from Arklow Co Wicklow to La Roca del Vallès Spain was stopped in Girona by the police and the 26 year old driver was arrested due to a number of offences!
❌Driving under the influence of alcohol
❌Driving with an overweight load
❌Travelling over 10 hours without a break
❌Tampering with the tachograph
❌Fraudulent recording of driving and rest times
❌No Certificate of Professional Aptitude
The driver was alone so another truck had to come and collect the calves further delaying their already very long journey with no food. The truck belongs to Dutch transport company Van Os but it’s not the first time it's been used by an Irish exporter. According to the Spanish police they are coming across a lot of livestock drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This is shocking!

Good news for a change!!!
We have three items of good news for you!

1. The Precautionary Confinement of Birds and Restriction of Assembly of Live Birds Regulations will be lifted from the 10th of May 2025. - that's today!

"S.I. No. 31/2025 - Avian Influenza (Precautionary Confinement of Birds and Restriction on Assembly of Live Birds) Regulations 2025 came into effect from 17th February 2025 to protect Irish poultry from avian influenza virus incursions.
No cases of avian influenza were detected in Ireland in poultry or wild birds in the month of April 2025.
The Bird Flu Radar, a tool developed for the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) as a spatiotemporal risk assessment model, also shows a decrease in probability of HPAI outbreaks in wild birds since the beginning of April.
While the risk of HPAI incursion in Irish poultry has decreased, it is not cero and biosecurity remains the #1 method in preventing and controlling the spread of disease.
The ‘best practice’ biosecurity measures as usually advised by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine continue to remain mandatory for all poultry and captive bird keepers."

2. All of the hens for our rescue over the next two weekends have been booked! We have taken bookings for the number of hens the farm told us are available, but they could be short of hens, or have more than they said. Either way, we will take them all. We will ask people to take one more or one less than they have booked if necessary.

3. We have another rescue planned for June! We don't have exact details of dates and collection points yet, but we will post on our page next week, when we have more information.
